I’M A PSYCHOLOGIST – Professor, Practitioner, Author — becoming the “other.?”   2 comments

It occurred to me, reading recent news from Florida, that my colleagues and I are in danger of becoming the “other.”

Of course it sparked memory of Niemöller’s familiar post WWII statement:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

—Martin Niemöller

By the way, I’m working on improving my understanding of this whole blog process thing. In fact I have a support person ready to help me with it, so I’d appreciate your making a comment to give me more info about how the system is working.

Thanks,

Mona

  1. Thanks Mona, for always being the kind, thoughtful observer. Being a Jew and someone who now lives only 10 miles down the road from New College, this is all real, not hypothetical. I appreciate you shining a light.

  2. Thanks, Lucy. I know I’ve done something right when I hear from you. I’m glad I’m not a psychology professor now; We used to enjoy such freedom! I’ve just returned from an Iceland cruise with a Covid diagnosis (don’t worry, I’m doing well) and a sense of the joy I felt in a country where every city we visited had a rainbow painted street. We do live in fascinating times!
