These costs are unspeakably painful for so many. Some come home to warm welcomes with only the overwhelming task of reintegrating into their families, finding jobs and slowly putting the agony of their war experiences into the bundle of their life experience. None will ever be the same. But some carry home life and relationship altering emotional and/or physical wounds that even the best of medical advancement cannot obviate. We have not done our job in “fighting the war” until those irreparably wounded have the care, support and constant dedication that we have extracted from them. It won’t look good on the balance sheet, but a good part of the cost will not go away until each service person has received recompense. It is so easy not to see.
Thank you, Mona. Keep the courage, keep speaking the truth, and, as Brian of Nazareth sang, “Look on the bright side of life.” Well…not that, but chin up and eyes straight ahead in faith and hope that the tide will turn.
